  Fieldwalking:

Fieldwalking is another technique used to cover large areas of ground, and is often used as the first stage in a project which may also involve geophysics and excavation.

Fieldwalking involves walking systematically across ploughed fields to recover artefacts that are lying exposed on the surface, having been brought to the surface by the plough

Where concentrations of material are found, this may provide an indication of buried archaeological features, which can then be targeted by geophysics or excavation.

Large areas can be covered reasonably quickly, but the technique is limited by the requirement for a ploughed field. CBAS has a great deal of experience in organising and carrying out fieldwalking surveys either as standalone surveys or as part of larger integrated projects.
