Chris Butler is one of the country’s leading experts on prehistoric flintwork. He specialises in identifying and analysing flintwork from the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, and has written the ultimate guide to prehistoric flintwork of the British Isles ‘Prehistoric Flintwork’.

Chris Butler offers a number of different services in this specialised area:

Assessment: Quantification and identification, with the production of a report which will identify any potential for further analysis, an excel spreadsheet and archive of any assemblage large or small.

Analysis: Full analysis of an assemblage, including any appropriate statistical analysis, preparation of a report to publication standard and full archive. Illustrations can also be arranged (see below).

Fieldwalked assemblages: Chris has many years experience in analysing, interpreting and reporting on flintwork assemblages from fieldwalking.

Flintwork identification training: A range of different flintwork training courses are available. These can be pitched at any level, from simple interest talks through to the training of field staff in the identification of worked flint.

Flintwork illustration: We can arrange for flintwork and other artefacts to be illustrated by qualified AAI&S illustrators.

Museum Appraisal: Many museums are now filled to overflowing with finds, the analysis of existing collections and the development of a collection policy in connection with assemblages of material has become a priority. Chris can offer an appraisal service for Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age flintwork museum collections.

Chris Butler currently undertakes flintwork assessment and analysis for a number of archaeological organisations in South-East England.
