 Landscape and Woodland Surveys

CBAS Limited have been involved over the last few years in a number of large landscape and woodland surveys:

An archaeological survey of Ashdown Forest was undertaken during 2007 and 2008 for the Conservators of Ashdown Forest to review the Historic Environment Resource and provide Conservation and Management recommendations for the Ashdown Forest Higher Level Stewardship Agreement. Prior to the survey, there were some 75 archaeological sites recorded on the HER within Ashdown Forest. A combination of desk-top study and field survey by CBAS identified a further 498 sites.

Surveys have also been carried out for the RSPB at Broadwater Warren and Tudely Woods near Tunbridge Wells, and for The Sussex Wildlife Trust at Old Lodge, as well as other surveys for private landowners.

Groundbreaking work by CBAS, in conjunction with Vivienne Blandford and Anne Locke, has been carried out using LiDAR to identify potential sites at locations across the Sussex Weald, and then confirming their presence with ground-truthing field visits.

Recent work at Broadwater Warren has seen CBAS monitoring extensive forestry work, to advise the contractors on how to avoid damaging the known archaeological sites, and working with them to record and protect newly discovered sites that emerge during the work.

CBAS have recently completed large woodland archaeology surveys of three major Sussex forests for the Forestry Commission. The surveys of St. Leonards Forest, Tilgate Forest and Sheffield Forest, utilising LiDAR, ground truthing and Historical research, the surveys discovered three very different forests, each containing remanante of their past and more recent uses, including iron working, rabbit warrens, woodland industries and landscaped parks.
